For 30 years or so, I have been doing a 7-day cleanse to allow my body to rest and clear. Autophagy is the body’s cellular cleaning process that removes damaged organelles, proteins, and pathogens to regenerate newer, healthier cells. When you cleanse (fast), this process happens. When I teach this to my students, I give them this visual: imagine pushing all last week’s groceries that you didn’t eat into the back of the fridge and putting your newly purchased food in front. When you don’t put new food into your body, it allows old cells to clear, simply put.

I completed my 7-day cleanse this morning, and this is the meal I chose to very slowly eat to wake up my resting organs.

Please remember that as a health professional with years of experience, I understand how to go into and out of a fast. I also do not have blood sugar issues. If you want to cleanse/fast, please seek assistance. Also, I close 7 days, but many people feel cleaner and clearer after 3 days.

Vitality Bowl

So delicious and nutritious!

Ingredients

6-ounce trout fillet, baked

1 cup spinach

1 cup arugula

1/4 red bell pepper, chopped

1 medium tomato, sliced

¼ cup raw sauerkraut

1 tablespoon lemon juice, or more, to taste

1 tablespoon avocado oil

1 tablespoon sesame seeds, as a garnish

2 tablespoons cilantro, chopped, as a garnish

Directions

Preheat oven to 400 degrees

Pat the trout dry with paper towels. Brush with avocado oil, and place skin side down on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Season with a little salt and pepper. Bake for 8-10 minutes or until the flesh flakes easily with a fork.

Place the trout, cooled or warm, in a plate with the spinach, arugula, pepper, tomato, and sauerkraut. In a small bowl, stir together the lemon juice and olive oil, then drizzle on top.

Garnish with the sesame seeds and cilantro and serve immediately. Enjoy!

Notes: Feel free to use salmon or other cold-water fish instead of the trout, parsley instead of the cilantro, and perhaps add a little mustard or miso to the lemon juice and olive oil.

Note that Omega-3 comes mostly from trout, and Omega-6 from avocado oil and sesame seeds. I used avocado oil because of the high oven temperature. Olive oil should not be heated that high as it’s damaged.
