TLC or Therapeutic Lifestyle Changes

Hello everyone,
The National Institutes of Health (the Heart, Lung and Blood Institute) have a new booklet available just in time for National Cholesterol Education Month in September. The booklet details lifestyle alterations with regards to weight management, exercise and diet to bring cholesterol levels down so as to avoid heart disease. I have read it and it offers many useful tips. It was good to see that they don't tout cholesterol-lowering drugs unless lifestyle changes are not affective.
There are some foods that they recommended that I wouldn't such as bagels and other refined products, but for the most part, it's a booklet worth ordering. I suggest you read it. Remember, we are all biochemical individuals and everything they suggest might not work for you. Read it and discuss any questions with your health practitioner.
From their web site:
For an online version of the new booklet, go to: http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/public/heart/chol/chol_tlc.htm. Printed copies are available for $4.00 through the NHLBI website or from the NHLBI Information Center at P.O. Box 30105, Bethesda, MD 20824-0105, or at 301-592-8573 or 240-629-3255 (TTY).

Healthy regards,
Patty

An introduction to Mum

Hello everyone,
This summer has been very busy with Summer Camp for Kids and my very first Learn to Cook in a Week course. Both were great successes and I had a wonderful time! My health blog has been unfortunately unattended for about 6 weeks, but no longer...
Someone I know told me last week that I should have my Mom, Joan James, on my web site with her endless insights and pearls of wisdom. She told me that everyone would be drawn to her energy, wisdom and essence. I don't know why I hadn't done this before; great idea! My Mom is 84 years young and for those of you to have been to my school, you know that Mum lives in the front apartment at the school. She is my welcome committee, yard waterer and all around inspiration. I asked Mum if she would be willing to jot someting down every week for my readers and sit for a photo for the web site. Well, she had her hair done that day and I have a page of idioms (her favorites) and musings. Look for Joan on my web site. If you have comments for her, just send them to me with To Joan in the subject line and I will pass them along.
Healthy regards!
Patty
